the Winterbourne which feeds into Kennet (flowing past Silbury) only flows in the winter months and does just suddenly start flowing - seemingly out of nowhere, like waters breaking.
Is there a particular month is does so? I suppose though, what it does now isn't what it would have done way back in the day, as drainage and all sorts of factors will be different.

This year the Winterbourne was flowing by early December but is associated very much with Swallowhead Spring which historically starts to flow around Imbolc ... now in fact. Although I do not participate myself there is usually a small pagan ceremony held at Swallowhead Spring - where the Winterbourne joins the Kennet to mark Imbolc, the welcome herald of daylight and spring.
