Silbury Mundi

Great minds! I was just about to add that to the Meg Poems thread. Including the bit that precedes it -

Very exciting. But I hope the diggers don’t come up with too many “solutions” to the mystery of Silbury and its inscrutable entourage of henges and barrows. To gaze on that prodigious pimple, especially with a mist swirling over the downs, is to feel both the ambition and the vainglory of Homo sapiens.

In a single word, what's the main appeal of Silbury? Mystery.

ah but least we know what stonehenge was all about.

"It was originally a straight-sided polyhedron with a domed top (the Saxons probably flattened that to make a fort during the Danish invasions)."

Like to know wot the evidence for a domed top is (didn't you raise the question somewhere else Nigel?). Seems to me if you're going to construct something on the scale of Silbury, with a winding (processional?) path to the summit, you wouldn't want go rolling off it when you reached the top :-) Silbury may have been higher but that's not to say it's not always been flat up there.
