R.Hippisley Cox’s The Green Roads of England, put forward the theory that Silbury was a 'shadow hill' it had a tall post on top which would cast a shadow from the sun, like a gnomon... interestingly when you look at some aerial photos, Silbury makes a beautiful cone shaped shadow but unless you were a shaman the effect would hardly be noticeable...
