Thank you very much both Fitz and Rhiannon for the info. I just found a site called Alibras where most of Lewis Spence's books are available including the one you mentioned Fitz. How very prolific he was - I will definitely be aquainting myself with his work (I hadn't as yet come across him). One of his many titles is 'History and Origins of Druidism'.
Rhiannon, I had a look at the web-site link you posted which was very interesting. I think the author of the little book I am reading (Celt, Druid and Culdee) uses the same source, namely Tacitus. According to the author, after Caratacus was betrayed and taken to Rome he was the solitary exception in the long catelogue of victims to imperial Rome that was spared. He was released after 7 years and allowed to return to Britain on condition that he swore an oath never to take up arms against Rome again.
