Aliens at Avebury

That is very interesting Littlestone. If you are interested in reading about Wiltshire village life in the early part of the 20th century, may I recommend
"Villages of the White Horse" by Alfred Williams (first published in 1913). I recall you posted something about him on Megalithic Poems earlier in the year so you may have already seen the book.

Unfortunately, he doesn't mention Avebury but does write chapters on Wayland Smithy, Barbury Castle and the Uffington White Horse. He walks his way from Bassett Down through several Wiltshire villages to Woolstone, writing about them as he goes. It is lovely to read about those places and visualise how peaceful it must have been to walk from one to another - without the M4. (Published by Nonsuch).

Yes, thank you for that.

Alfred Williams (The Hammerman Poet) is another relatively unknown Swindon writer, poet and painter worthy of a little more attention. He worked in the Great Western Railway factory in Swindon for 23 years as a rivet hotter and then as furnace boy. "Alfred's heart, though, was always in the countryside and he spent time learning its ways and painting its landscapes. He was also determined to educate himself and in 1897 began reading in earnest, even utilising his dinner hour, to the amusement of his colleagues at the factory. In 1900 he embarked on a four-year English Literature course with Ruskin Hall, Oxford, even learning Latin to aid his studies."*
