Silbury Hill

Aliens at Avebury

English Heritage's second short film is now available at http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.17511 It opens with a stunning snow-covered shot of Silbury. It is this sort of image that brings home what a treasure we have here and how badly the structure has been treated over the last few hundred years. The thought that English Heritage is even contemplating leaving 20th and 21st century objects inside the structure beggars belief.

Silbury stands far apart from the arrogance of modern publicity and the treasure hunters of the past. Watch the film, repair the damage, and then let it be.

Just watched the little film - very good I thought. The introduction with Silbury covered in snow and shrouded in mist captured the mystical quality of the site.
Well done Heritage Action for your efforts in calling English Heritage to account - they now appear to be articulate and open about the progess of the on-going work. There is no doubting it must have seemed a daunting task at the outset - however much expertise was, or was not, at their disposal.

"After protecting the tunnel opening from the weather..."

So why didn't they do that:
a) when the shaft first collapsed on top?
b) before the recent rains came (water ingress was given as the reason the halt to works a week or so ago)
