Digging Silbury

Ah but as I recall (from a TV prog) the dark had occurred in smokey victorian times and there was no intention to ever have the new stuff blend in - so that future generations would know what had been done in our era, and something about it would be a permanent record of how much less smokey it was in the twenty first century...

Maybe the TV had it wrong because it sounds a lot of dollop to me, in fact i might just go up there and....

nah, better not.

Chuckle - you're actually getting into an area that's tormented conservators and restorers for yonks - ie to what point in time do you actually attempt to conserve/restore something? Restoration is not the same as conservation. Restoration takes an object back to some point in its history, conservation freezes it in the present, with as little interference as possible.

Most of the time I adhere to conservation ethics - when it comes to Avebury, however, I tend to wear a restorer's hat - it's a bit like falling off the wagon ;-)
