found an article last night, suggesting that there was a large pole sticking out of the top of Silbury, used for casting a shadow for the Winter Solstice ... the work of Moses Cornish, I believe

where will this mound/tree-type thing madness end?

mind you, if that's the case, then the hole in the top of Silbury might be nothing to do with the Duke of Northumberland, but might in fact be due to a big, prehistoric socket hole

quite a thought ...

I must admit the thought had (briefly) crossed my mind, but sheeesh, that would be some socket for one heck of a stone!!!

Adding further to it all, I have heard tell of a local barrow (here in Ireland) that has a standing stone on top ... off to investigate .... I will let you know.

I also saw a small hill, about 15m tall, near the megalithic cemetry at Loughcrew yesterday that was very similar in profile to Silbury. No peak is presented on the OS map. I did not get chance to investigate as I was too wrapped up in the 20+ tombs and countless standing stones, promentary forts and a solitary stone circle. I never made it to the forts, the circle or most of the standing stones. There was so much there that at least another two visits are needed to take it all in.

Local historian Brian Edwards found an eyewitness account of the Drax 1776/7 dig which mentions there was wood from top to bottom in the center of Silbury.
This was most likely planks to shore up the sides to stop the delicate layering falling in not a bloody gurt pole sticking out of the top.
If there was a pole then it would not be very effective as the landscape around silbury is not flat, which would be necessary for a shadow casting gnomen.

On the banks of Lough Gur there is also a stone known as 'Cloch a Bhile' .. or .. The Stone Of the Tree, which is said to be a representation of the tree draped in it's cloth, at the bottom of the lake.
