Re: Hob's photo of The Matfen Stone at http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/39415 and his question, "Do standing stones often get beer named after them?
Dunno about standing stones Hob but some five or six years back Ushers of Trowbridge did an excellent organic beer called <b>Silbury Golden</b>. Great picture of Silbury on the front of the bottle and on the back the following words...

"Brewed in the West Country, this Ushers recipe uses organically grown malt and hops to create a golden beer with a delicate hop aroma, refreshingly light bitterness and clean crisp finish. A mystery amongst the fertile pains of Wiltshire, Silbury Hill is the largest man-made mound in Europe. Started in 2660Bc, it rises to 130ft and covers 5 acres. Its purpose has been lost over the ages; one theory suggests it was a solar observatory, whilst another links it to "Lamamas" (Harvest Festival) as the mound becomes most visible when nearby grain crops have been harvested."

Now, with a pedigree like that, and at Alc.4.5%Vol., that's a pretty classy beer ;-)

When VBB gave his Silbury talk in Marlborough a few years back he cracked open a bottle at the begining and drank it throughout the evening.

Hiya,

Although not named after the standing stones, the Orkney Brewery's <ib>Dark Island</ib> features a picture of the Ring of Brodgar (www.orkneybrewery.co.uk), and that fine single malt distillery <b>Highland Park</b> feature them on its 18 yr old (www.highlandpark.co.uk). Which is lush, but a tad pricey at £58.00 . . . :0(

I'm sure there's others, trying to remember pump clips from the past . . .

Egads Littlestone, you've made me realise I was amiss in not adding relevant info to that picture.

Ahem. <reads out loud>

"Matfen Magic
A Brown ale, hopped with a combinationof Fuggles and Brambling Cross.
This traditional premium ale has a beatiful aroma of blackberries and autumn fruits, with malty and chocolate overtones"

4.8% Vol.

I wanna drink it now, so I can say if it's any good, but I've telt meself that I must have first taste in the presence of the Matfen Stone itself. How daft is that?
