I've just been reading (Devereux:1992) ""Symbolic Landscapes: Dreamtime Earth and Avebury's Open Secret" Gothic Image Publications

Devereux discusses the comparisons between Silbury and Great Pyramids of Eygpt in terms of latitudal position, meridian lines and angles of composition.

I'm confused... (easily done these days!) :o)

How could the two commuities know of one another?
I've tried to draw similar conclusions and appreciations of religion but can only find similarities between "contemporary paganism" and "buddhism" which is probably clutching at straws!

The Pyramids are believed to be a causeway... and that some would argue that the foundations have existed before the official origins of the site??

I just wondered if anyone else could help shine some light on this please?
Much appreciated
Zoe

I've got here dates for the different monuments as Silbury 2150 BCE....Pyramids 2600 to 2500 BCE although Silbury's is often disputed. So not exactly contemporary and I think that current opinion is that the idea of a "Pyramid" type construction was thought of independently by several cultures including those in S. America.

Hello,
I've never read Devereux, but generally I would beware of 'comparative' theorising both religious and historical. These ideas are popular because they offer simple explanations of the many diverse mysteries left in such confusing abundance by ancient and vanished peoples. Really, though, to try and construct specific links between Silbury and the Pyramids is just distracting from the wonder of Silbury itself. There's also a long and dodgy tradition of re-writing history to fit people's prejudices, i.e. that no-one in ancient Britain could have been together enough to build Silbury without 'outside help'. Finally, any society anywhere in the world trying to build something really big would find the most stable structure starts big at the bottom and gets smaller the higher it gets, like Silbury, the Pyramids, Palenque temples, Ziggurat of Ur etc, also sandcastles...
