"Strip away the terraces, forget the spiral path - what's left? Size and proximity to Silbury Hill."
It feels like it and smells like it. But maybe that's not entirely convincing to anyone but me.
I haven't checked the slope angle, but suspect that's very similar, and is why I think they smell the same. (Silbaby's slope is identical to Silbury - and I mean really identical. What are the chances?)
The proximity of the river? A feature common to all three? Was there/is there also a spring near Merlin's? There is at the others.
Silbaby, I think, has multiple faces to it's slopes, the same number as Silbury. Is there any trace of such a thing on Merlin's? Who knows, it would be a subtle effect, and the trees would prevent it being apparent I expect.
Is there anything to be learned from the views of Merlin's from the prehistoric? trackways on nearby ridges overlooking it? And vice versa? Is there a Merlin's game? Modern trees and buildings make it a very frustrating exercise to check that out, but someone ought to. I've just got irritated by it, but Mr Cope oughta, he likes that sort of thing.
(The whole Avebury area needs a detailed and very accurate topographical model, as nowhere else in the country I reckon. It's alignment central, so why not? Ah, but who'd pay for the Jester then?)
So far as I can work out, Silbury, Silbaby AND Merlins would all be visible from a few feet above the Sanctuary (minus modern intervening trees) and vice versa. Does this mean squat?
Exits, rambling.
