Was that recently Pete? At the time of the collapse it was said that his family OWNED the hill but had VESTED it in the nation.
He was talking about it in quite a proprietorial manner...
" Lord Avebury, who owns the hill, called for speedier action from English Heritage to prevent the hole getting any bigger and to find a practical way of filling it in....Also speaking last week, Lord Avebury, whose family bought the hill in the 19th century but vested it in the nation, said he urgently wanted to see some tangible signs action was being taken to prevent any further collapse of the hill top....After seeing photographs commissioned by the Gazette Lord Avebury said he had contacted the office of Lord McIntosh, the House of Lord's Heritage spokesman: "I have rung the Minister's office again to say that while I am waiting until he gets around to answering my letter, they ought to know about this latest deterioration."....Lord Avebury said there was clearly great public concern that little seemed to be being done to stem any further collapses at Silbury Hill and said: "I think the least English Heritage can do is issue a statement giving a situation report and explain what they are doing."
