From what I know they (EH) are doing some more core samples soon to assess 'the hole'.

The hole appeared when some very dodgy Victorian (I think) excavations collapsed in. Someone cut a vertical shaft right down the centre to try and find the burial ... of course they didn't find one. Then a couple of feckers absailed down the hole and caused further collapse.
