I visited the circle on Wednesday to find the additional stone back in place. Talking to an elderly resident he told me he had moved it away at least three times but someone keeps putting it back.

What is the forums view on this? there is no evidence to suggest that there was ever a ninth stone but the new one does not look out of place...a little small perhaps but..

At the same time...and visited on the same day, St Nunns Well has now got a family of plastic faeries residing around the bowl...should they stay?...I would love to get rid of them but part of me says someone put them there for a reason the same way the ancients would have left offerings.

Mr H

According to the best historical info I can find on the Duloe site, the two smallest "original" stones are only incorrectly placed fragments of the larger stones during it's clumsy restoration.

apparently it was only officially "discovered" in 1806, after a hedge which ran through it was removed, previous to the restoration all of the stones were actually fallen. has there actually been a good(i.e modern) archaeological survey done of this site, the most recent i could find documented was from 1882 - which doesn't particularly me inspire much faith, given victorian archaeological knowledge and techniques.

So perhaps the new stone IF it was found lying around locally is just as much right to be there as the two smallest stones anyway....lol.

As for the fairies, I know just what you mean....the things some people leave at ancient sites( reminds me of a post I read here or somewhere of a 3 foot carved wooden leopard being left in one of the side chambers at West Kennet!!), however I take the view that it's certainly better than setting fires (including burning tea lights in alcoves) or daubing paint or chalk everywhere!.

My take on it is....it's just basic littering, not as bad as vandalism but still bad.....if it makes people happy to pick a few flowers and leave them at sites....fine....they bio-degrade quickly. the junk like the pixies and the aforementioned leopard don't.

And whilst this may seem a harsh attitude.....what would happen if everyone came and left junk at these sites?

I suppose the only 'judgement' you can make is damage to site, and presumably the plastic fairies were'nt damaging the site.
Should we make decisions on other peoples beliefs or aesthetic tastes? all very subjective...
I suppose you could remove them under the law of 'ecoside', vandalising the environment of the well. ;).

Sounds like I now have a good reason to trek over to that end of the county next week. Listen out for your phone!

Just as an aside, where do you park for Duloe? Every time I go past there I can't park in the private road and the bend's just too dangerous/narrow to risk!

Speaking of Duloe, I've just checked it out on Google Earth - does anyone know what gives with the big spiral motif just north of the church? It's not a turf labryinth, it's just a spiral...
