Don't get me going on this or the mysterious Eds will scream "off topic". The yeth-hounds or yell-hounds of the west country are the hounds of the Wild Hunt. That is the generic name for any ghostly or demonic hunstman and his pack. Dando's Dogs, Seven Whistlers, Gabriel Hounds. Often led by Odin or Herne or the Devil they even figure in that cowboy song "Ghost Riders in the Sky". Always heard when doom foretold.

Black Shuck is the Norfolk and Suffolk version of the black dog and is always solitary. Often foretelling death, he has also been known to warn of disaster and so avert it.

Hey. I'll run with hounds for a while :-)

Here's a great story. http://www.megalithomania.com/show/site/931

Several High Crosses have hunt scenes carved on them. A memorial to the local lord/king who paid for the cross and liked hunting or a hint of past local lore?

Ireland has had lots of hound stories including Cuchulain et al. Several tombs were once know as The Great Hound's Bed - later perverted to The Greyhound's Bed!

The mysterious Eds put up with all my local landscape legend mumblings so I'm sure they'll put up with any of your interesting thoughts. I'm sure there are several sites on here closely connected with the dogs (which I will pull out if I can think of them).
