That is the generic name for any ghostly or demonic hunstman and his pack. Dando's Dogs, Seven Whistlers, Gabriel Hounds. Often led by Odin or Herne or the Devil they even figure in that cowboy song "Ghost Riders in the Sky". Always heard when doom foretold.
Black Shuck is the Norfolk and Suffolk version of the black dog and is always solitary. Often foretelling death, he has also been known to warn of disaster and so avert it.
