D'ya wanna buy some water-worn axes? I can sell them by weight or colour.
I could send you enough axes to build a rather small wall.

In this months Cumbria magazine, they've got an article on Tony Greenbank, the fella who builds Goldsworthys walls.

I've just brought the front half of a small axe back, last week. It had snapped in half but the sharpened end is still bright. It's a piece of fossil tree fern originally - so it's a fossil and a tool, and broken. I was looking at the river that disappears in summer yesterday. It goes underground and then shoots out from the stones a few hundred metres downstream. Just looks like a normal river in the winter.

Goldsworthy's walls are crap. When I get a chance I go and give them the drystone wallers trial - they always fail. I offered to teach him walling once - no reply. His bended and arranged leaves are pretty good - I'd like to burn one of them on the palm of my hand - but are, again, copied from oriental originists.

Hi Fitz,
"In this months Cumbria magazine, they've got an article on Tony Greenbank, the fella who builds Goldsworthys walls."

Tony Greenbank is an ex-climber of great repute in Cumbria. The Fell and Rock Climbing Club guides tell of many of his first ascents. He has taken over from the great Harry Griffin as the fortnightly contributor of the Cumbria section of "A Country Diary". As far as I know he doesn't build the Goldsworthy walls. He's in his 70s, and has just had a hip replacement.
Regards,
TE.
