Let me get this right, National Trust sanction stupid decoration of ancient monument, someone removes it and the POLICE are called in?!!
Did we slip into a parallel universe and no-one told me?
Do I recall that NT said they'd certainly "learned" from the Uffington fuss?
If anyone gets their collar felt they could contact English Heritage's Christopher Welch, Inspector of Ancient Monuments, who wrote to me about Uffington: "We were not aware of any intention to create this image at Uffington: had we been consulted we would have raised concerns about the effect upon the setting of a nationally important monument."
On the other hand, if anyone really did contact the police they'd probably be greeted with a fair bit of contempt.
And yes, I reckon it was "shock" advertising. They'd have known very well what effect it would have had.
