A spiral earthwork does not necessarily indicate a serpent. It may have been made for an entirely different reason, and then later people thought "hang on! that must've been the Lambton Worm". Silbury has a spiral path, for instance, but I can't think of any serpentine folklore attached to that place (although I can for Avebury, re. Stukely's Dracontium).

All in all... I find the direct linguistic connection of the name "Worm Hill" far more convincing than Pensher's earthwork. (I'm not denying that Pensher was HUGELY significant here: my fieldnotes on the Pensher page show just how important I think it was)
