Bit premature I know, before the excavation, but what makes them think that there might be a previous "henge?" monument before the existing bank and ditch?

There was a dig into the ditch in 1908 which showed that the bank may have been built over an earlier small bank.
keiller also tieded up the end of the bank in the north and found some signs.
In the southern entrance there is a round concrete marker which marks the site of a huge post hole which may also have been part of an earlier feature.
