Dr Mike Pitts has approached the Avebury parish council to seek permission for a huge excavation of Avebury in 2003.
He aims to pick up the remaining fallen stones and excavate the sections that Keiller didn't do in the hope of finding buried stones and re-erecting them also.
He has asked for locals and interested visiters to help erect one small stone in the old fashion way (Ie without heavey machinery).
There is some dissent within the village but others are willing to go along with it.
More meeting with NT & EH are in the pipeline.
I will keep you posted as news comes to me...

lets hope...lets hope

Sounds like the most fantastic idea, to restore the stones wantonly destroyed by the religeous bigots, but let us be very mindful of the destruction caused by well-meaning excavation in the past and leave much to be discovered by future generations. If we know all we are in danger of losing the mystery.
Jimit.

A "Mike Pitts" was the winner of my auction on ebay last year: 14 old Current Archaeology mags.
I asked if he was "the" Mike Pitts but he didn't answer, hehe.

More news.
The first stage is a consultation with the villagers on December 4th.
Mike proposes 4 digs for 2003.
A section of the bank to be dug to see if the bank had an earlier feature.
The Crop mark behind the lodge, which could be a barrow of funerary feature.
The timber post holes in the northern sector.
Excavating and re-erecting the fallen stone in the east (on the right had side of green st, Not the large stone on the left, at least not next year.)
Mike is putting out a press release shortly and I will post it here when I get a copy.
