I've just cast my eye over the beginning chapter very quickly but it stands out that the plan is to undertake excavations only in a disciplined way where it fits into proper research. And that research has to be done in a sustainable way ie "meeting today's need for improved knowledge and understanding of the WHS without jeopardising the ability of future generations to do the same". So I reckon that doesn't include reerecting all the buried stones just to satisfy the aesthetic sensibilities of visitors. Whereas maybe excavating the beckhampton stones finally proved something major that hadn't been proved before
(the resistivity surveys weren't conclusive
http://www.eng-h.gov.uk/reports/beckhampton/ )
ie that the avenue really did exist.

Anyway I dunno, why don't you email Josh Pollard and Mark Gillings, then you won't have to speculate.

Wasn't speculating just wondering why one hole being dug is 'destroying the archaeology' when another one isn't! Can't have it both ways, but apparently you can!
I've asked this question before, but I don't think it received an answer: *what* archaeology is potentially being destroyed, given that the burial holes are medieval?

They ARE both destroying the archaeology. That was precisely my point, did you not look at the document? That's the reason why a responsible archaeologist, thinking about the possibilities of the future, wouldn't go digging up everything all at once. Yes some stones from the beckhampton avenue were excavated, but they didn't go digging up the entire purported line of the stones - that leaves possibilities for the future, the 'sustainability' thing mentioned.

Also, medieval traces have things to tell us too - what about the things we can find out about why the stones were buried in the first place - is that not of interest to the history of Avebury? and illuminates attitudes to the stones in later times?
if you page down there's a section that mentions this

(stone destruction)
