Avebury Dig 2002

It's quite amazing that the they are finding stuff so shallow on farmland, especially at a field head.
You've usually got feet/centuries of stuff to dig through till you find the good stuff.
How old is the field/boundary, burnt layer could be more recent (i dunno, scrub/tree bole clearance... just curious :)

Talking to Josh today it seems the burnt stuff maybe of medieval date. A barn or something.
The Kennet ave test pits have already thrown up some nice mesolithic flint tools.
The area around here is so rich in materials you only have to turn a sod of earth or kick a few mole hills to find something.
My boy Kieron (12) has found perfect finger knives, arrow heads, scrapers and loads of broken hand axes.
At East kennet long barrow (where very few people bother to go) he found a heart shaped stone with a drilled hole though it.

Little delicate blue victorian bottles are common after the fields have been plowed around the edges of the houses in the villages.
Someone found a gold Posy ring at Trusloe earlier in the year.
The local tractor drivers have a competition between them to find the best arrow head. They carry them in thier wallets to show off to each other.
If you fancy a little impromtu excavtion you can dig up my potatoe patch if you like :)
