I believe your last comment to be 100% correct. Often when looking at these Neolithic sites one should always consider what was there before them to see what encouraged the builders to construct them there in the first place. It is a fact that the Ridgeway Path was there first so may well be the reason why the West Kennet Avenue with the Sanctuary at the termination of it reached out to the Ridgeway like it did. It could have stopped short of it or beyond, but it it didn't, so that must be a major clue. Food for thought!
