Yes, the NT are at least trying to see both sides of the argument and playing fair as to camping at Avebury... but I suppose there will be the usual outcry... the festival of Solstice at both Stonehenge and Avebury should be welcomed in a drear world of what is seen to be politically correct, or even religiously correct ;)
I completely agree! Whatever people's reasons for wanting to be there (and I'm sure there are many!) they should be allowed to do their thang. As long as it's respectful to the site, the other visitors, and in the case of Avebury, the villagers...

I kinda wish I could be arsed to go along! Just to see what all the fuss is about. The big crowds have never appealed to me...

I don't think you'd like it Goff,

We were there last year Goffik, not my sort of thing either but the atmosphere was very welcoming, the sights and sounds were quite something compared to how it had been earlier in the day.

Wish I could go this year, I'd bloody camp too.

Aye, well done to the National Trust on this occasion!

I've spent two summer solstices at Avebury - nights spent in the open, in the south-east quadrant, with friends and in reasonably comfortable conditions (made possible by a ground sheet, a bit to eat and drink, and a few lights to see each other by). The atmosphere there was absolutely wonderful - made even better by the unexpected arrival of two other friends! No trouble at all, even the police were enjoying themselves!

A word - it can get very chilly in the early hours, so anyone planning to spend the night in the open might want to think about taking warm clothing, a good sleeping bag and ground sheet, and something hot to drink in the morning. There's a good long wait between dawn and sunrise...
