Wee addendum and nerd alert . There was a line of posts leading from the south western palisade enclosure at West Kennet ,dead straight it crossed Gunsight lane and was over 200m long .The point it pointed to on the horizon at Lurkely Hill was the point that where the winter solstice sun would be seen to rise .
That complicates matters surely, ignoring the far greater ritual assemblage of Avebury? From what I remember the dates start from 2300 bc and Whittle says the enclosures were shortlived, probably used for ritual feasts of pork....its not April the first Tiompan is it ;)
Thats the problem with that kind of stuff , is it intentional ? Those alignments that are accepted as being intentional are then considered as as something to "observe" ,provides images of jostling among the elite for the best view , vendors of of neolithic shades (probably just like the inuit ones ) on the good clear days and brollies and hogburgers on the more typical . A bit like the term avenue which led to suggestions of procession .
