I was astonished to learn that Avebury school is being closed in July forever.
Apparently the land is to be sold off to a developer.
Planning permission has also been granted for 5 new houses on the site of the old garage north of the circle.
With the Post Office closing in October Avebury is all set to become another NT show village.

That seems very sad, sorry to hear it.

Very sad indeed... but I suppose it was only a matter of time... if there's a profit to be made, nowt's safe any more! :(

....and I wonder where the new residents will come from (I doubt that a Wiltshire accent will be heard amongst any of 'em). It's very sad.

That absolutley sucks, i cant think of a more magical place to spend your childhood, why are the idiots allways in charge.

That's a shame Pete - even when i first visited as a kid in the early eighties, it seemed like an english village that just happened to have a very wierd thing round it - the villagers seemed rather unaware - perplexed even by the fuss. Kind of unselfconcious in a way - and the pub seemed like just a pub. Compared with Stonehenge, it felt like a discovery

But a lot has changed - this site is part of that isn't it? - and JC's book and people who offer tours no? It's regrettable -but how would you stop it? The NT owning it don't seem so bad really - and they'll probably curtail the excesses of the embarassing fringe groups ..

Went to a meeting at school tonight and despite voiciferous protests from us parents the school will close forever. Eleven pupils in September doesnt warrant the school staying open. But i fought the fight as best i could.

As is generally well known, The New Inn at Winterbourne Monkton – the venue for ‘Cabbage Sunday’ since its inception – is now only operating as a B&B establishment, and has closed as a public house - at least while it remains with the present owners.
I have recently spoken to all those people who have been involved with organising ‘Cabbage Sunday’.
With the number of people attending having declined in recent years, and with the need to find an alternative venue no-one, who has been involved with the organisation of the event feels that they can commit themselves to the extra work involved to keep ‘Cabbage Sunday’ going.
If, on the other hand, anyone wishes to take up the challenge, or who would simply be willing to help with the organisation, they would be more then welcome – please ring Nita on 01672 539368 to discus details; if asked, I would be prepared to continue to act as auctioneer on the day.
If no–one is prepared to take up the challenge, clearly the event will not take place. This would of course, seriously effect the finances of the Avebury & District Over 60’s Club (the main recipients of the proceeds) and of course, the usual donation made to the Wiltshire Blind Association, would not be possible either.
