What about a radical solution, as Avebury is such an important prehistoric place perhaps the NT should buy up the houses of the village. Okay we are going back to a feudal structure, but Lacock village houses are owned by the NT and its integrity is assured by ownership within the nation as a whole - a common inheritance...
There are plans to build a new house just outside the henge but within the village, such things should not really be allowed on a long term basis, as accreting more buildings under the "right of private ownership" is harmful to Avebury as a World Heritage Site..

(Anyone who does'nt know Lacock, Wilts - its a pretty village full of historic houses),

In the end the car park vis the Pagans is a small problem in a much larger problem that needs to be addressed, as to the future protection of the Avebury stones and landscape....

what have a show village? shudder
You'd better ask the landed gentry and rock stars if they want to move their family homes.
In a lot of cases the Avebury familys go back a very long way, what right does anyone have to move them on?

Good point moss, though I can't see it happening. Sad, really, when you see the compulsory purchase orders being slapped on residential and industrial properties around Stratford so they can be cleared away for the 2012 Olympics. Yet again, high finance and reputations in the political and sporting worlds win over 'lesser' considerations like World Heritage Sites.

I don't think Castle Combe is National Trust but, like Lacock, it got itself sorted out by banning parking in the High Street and building a large tarmac carpark outside the village. In fact, the carpark is so outside that it's a good fifteen minutes walk, with no pavements, downhill to the village itself! If Castle Coomb can do it so can Avebury. But let's stop kidding ourselves, there's plenty of land around Avebury which could provided the necessary facilities and overnight stays if the will were there but the fact is that the will isn't there - at least not from local residents (though they seem to have found plenty of land for their social club, its carpark and the huge playing field at the back of the club. There's not even a pedestrian crossing from the Red Lion to the circle - perhaps the residents don't like to see white lines on their roads either ;-)
