Yes, I'm afraid I have to agree with you there Clint. The Red Lion is a great pub but accommodation (for the price you pay) is definitely sub-standard.

I think it was the Swindon Room where I also stayed a few years back and the shower was absolutely dreadful (sorry Scousemaiden but it really was). And having a curfew in this day and age is really not on. When I stayed at the Lion we actually had to leave a friend's house in the village (before midnight I think it was) to get back to the pub before we were locked out! I'm sure a couple of doors in the right place would solve this problem. The breakfast was good though and we took ours outside. Bacon and eggs on your table and the stones in front of you - perfec' :-)

My tip - if you can't stay at the Lodge, go to the New Inns at Winterbourne Monkton. Catch a bus into the stones, stay as long as you like and walk the mile back *but take a torch*. The cars whiz past. You get your own key and can come and go as you please.
I love the Red Lion, but because of the curfew, it's really not an option for us I'm afraid. My one problem with them was they didn't tell us about the curfew untill half hour before the pub closed. We had a picnic and everything for a midnight feast by the stones. We ended up sleeping in my van in the car park! No way were we going to be loked in at 11.30.
When they told me "you can't go outside, we're closing the pub" I thought I was on candid bleedin' camera!
I didn't make a fuss though. You can't blame the staff.
I understand that they can't have a seperate entrance because it's a listed building or something - fair enough. But people should be warned before they book. I think that's only fair.
But I've spent many happy hours in the Red Lion since, and I wish I was there now!
