I can show you a railway bridge that was painted one side with ochre. There are several fieldwalls I know to have been also painted with red ochre wash so the evidence is strong in one of the most old-fashioned parts of the country. Can anyone remember front steps being whitened with a 'donkey stone' ?

Colour; in a new short guide book I read today, in the section on the hot water springs at Bath, she speculates that the oxidised iron salts which discolour the rocks, and in prehistoric time vegetation, must have symbolised the blood of slaughtered animals..... whatever, there is a very good gold painting of the round 6" Lansdown bronze age "sun disc". In fact its central motif is a star.
