And when you get in you can't get out . (For six months or so). I'll buy a protractor and get a better look at Thom's plan. There's a month or so before the shortest day. The principal alignment of the Avebury stones is +36 declination which A Thom guessed was the setting point of Deneb - one of the stars of Cygnus. The largest of the four stone rows in Bolton also inclines on this azimuth - maybe towards Deneb setting in those days, maybe not - but it shows that both sets of stones were put up about the same time, and in the same spirit.

Pete - I only seem to understand stone rows (and a bit of simple Rock Art) but, anyway, here's the view at Avebury toward what I think should be the moonrise at lunar maximum - http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/19882. It's an excellent picture. The lunar maximum is often at First Quarter so can be expected to be rising in the afternoon. In April, I believe.

This particular view is obscured by those trees (Druidic grove?) now but their leaves will have fallen by the Winter Solstice and the sightline will then be clear. This picture is slightly sideways on to this Avebury 'stone row' but emphasises how a pair of the monster rocks may have been chipped away, perhaps to frame the rising solar disc on the shortest day. http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/11544. There's no photographs of that anywhere !

Northumbrian experience would suggest that there'll be something on or near the skyline of these views. A cairn, a single stone or a mound often. If only there were someone taking photographs of these events in Bolton !
