Long time no speak. A few of the regulars may remember my old posts from travels I did with my (soon to be ex) wife. I'm after a reminder from anybody. From my one and only visit to Avebury I recall a pub that did B&B at the top end of the village. What is it called, phone number and any experience of it would be appreciated by anybody. Want to find something again and Avebury is a good starting point for me.

Thanks for any help.

The Red Lion. Tel: 01672 539266. If you're looking for memories that's probably the place - if you're looking for somewhere better I reckon you're about to find out.

The New Inn at Winterbourne Monkton is about a mile from the village. There's a bus every hour to Avebury, and a short walk back (take a torch, it's a wild road). That's my favourite Avebury stop-over.

The Red Lion is the pub you are thinking of in Avebury. . but they have a 'lock in' rule. You don't get a key to the pub, so you have to be 'in' by 11.30 (when they close). It's a bit like living with your parents and being 13 again. I suppose some like it!

I think there are 3 b&bs in Avebury too, but I haven't stopped at any and don't have their numbers. There are cards pinned in the post office though, perhaps you could ring them?

If you are driving, and aren't to bothered about spending time in the stones at night without driving, then Marlborough or Calne or Devizes has plent of digs.

But for my money, book in the New Inns, http://www.thenewinn.net/ catch the bus into Avebury, grab some beers, buy some tat from the shops. . and brave the mile walk back. It's nothing when you're megalith powered!

if u use the red lion and eat in the restaurant try this little amusing game.......see how many bottles of vineger you have to look into until you find a bottle WITHOUT dead flys in..the current record is 5 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!..disgusting

The New Inn.
It will change hands in October after cabbage Sunday (first sunday in Oct, get there for a feckin great day)

Flies in the ointment (sorry, vinegar) aside the Lion's a great place as a pub but as a B&B it's absolute crap. The one and only time I stayed there (about four years ago) our view of the outside world was a brick wall and an extracter unit that rattled all night long (or was it the bed?). The 'shower room' was a horrible dark little place with paint peeling off the walls and ceiling that reminded us of something out of Lord of the Flies. Breakfast was uninspired to say the least. The Lion's a great place to drink but stay somewhere else - try Mrs Dixon's place at the top of the hill just outside Avebury Trusloe (Tel: 06723 588). Gotta be one of the best B&B breakfasts in the country (with real coffee!) and if you can get the front bedroom you'll also get a view of Silbury.

A good tent??
