You sure this isn't caused by the roots of trees growing when this was soft sand Pete ?

As you know there are lots of examples and they make nice holes and swirly bits (swirly - is that a word ?).

As for mounds not being dug into if you know of some that John Merewhether didn't then it is a find...

I've seen a lot of tree roots and swirly fossils but this is very different. I'll go back at night with a torch sometime and take some more pics.
Here's one of the mounds I found

It has no signs of excavation, rabbit /badger holes and is in very good condition.
There is a single sarcen laid flat on the top of it.
