Whilst out leaping from stone to stone today on a sarcen drift I was stopped dead in my tracks by this!
http://aveburytour.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/Sunsign.jpg
After visiting the cupmarked stone recently with Hob & co I have been looking at sarcens with an eye to any
unnatural features.
I'm not an expert in rock art by any means but it looks
artifical to me and felt like it had been pecked out
rather than a fossil.
It is about 7 inches across and a fair sized sacren (number 275,672b in the PeteG catalogue)
and in a place which has very few visiters.

I also found a clump of mounds that have never been dug into.
One small barrow even has a cap stone in its centre....
more another day,

You sure this isn't caused by the roots of trees growing when this was soft sand Pete ?

As you know there are lots of examples and they make nice holes and swirly bits (swirly - is that a word ?).

As for mounds not being dug into if you know of some that John Merewhether didn't then it is a find...

Does look a lot like a sun sign - similar to those in Scandinavia.

looks very much like a man made doodle to me ! VERY intresting
