Totally agree! Perhaps if people are truly serious about Avebury they should be prepared to make a foot pilgrimage to it, from Calne maybe.... The destructive force at the moment is road-building and an economy that allows people to just get in a car and go where they want, in the end we destroy what we want to protect - solitude and peace. Green philosophy suggests that you are responsible for your own actions and that you should serve the community and place in which you live. Avebury ain't about how we or the authorities feel, it is about the people who live there and their views, And.... whoever suggested that trees should be cut down for a "sighting line" should be publicly flogged - they have probably been there longer than him anyway.

There's a lot to be said for that idea. People need to be encouraged out of their cars. The sad thing is, while the internal combustion engine reigns supreme, there's really no ideal solution for sites like Avebury.

I actually don't agree with the idea that "... this is about Avebury and the people who live there..." Avebury is a World Heritage Site and as such the 'world' has as much right to access and enjoy the place as the villagers do to live there (how you reconcile those two needs is a tough one though).

The question of trees in the circle is an interesting one - I don't think we should just assume the circle was ever conceived as being 'treeless'.
