Avebury Bypass

close

It hardly needs saying but traffic through Avebury is reaching catastrophic proportions - especially during the rush hour when the noise is deafening and you take your life in your hands just trying to cross from one side of the circle to the other.

If the sheer volume of traffic wasn't bad enough the mega-trucks now going through is REALLY scary! Got a feeling that problems with the Cove were caused by vibration from heavy vehicles and I wonder how long it's going to be before one of those big suckers takes out the Diamond Stone. This isn't about speed restrictions through Avebury or pedestrian crossings (non-existent at present) it's about safety, conservation and restoring a degree of tranquillty at a World Heritage/Sacred Site.

There've been suggestions for an Avebury Bypass before but maybe now is the time to re-kindle the idea before it's to late.

The bypass is not going to happen in our lifetime.
As to the traffic disturbing the Cove , I don't think so.
The reason the tall stone started to lean was that the packing stones on the outside were removed when the cottage was built. It was stable until the cottage was destroyed and the foundations removed.

A park and ride would link Avebury up with those who don't have car access (so long as the park was somewhere sensible) plus cut car numbers visiting the village.

It could pay for itself - certainly at weekends - and fits in with 'our' environmental ideals and meet local green travel plans (presuming Wiltshire CC has such a thing).

Hey!
a by-pass would be really cool, a ring road would be even better ! All those roundabout opportunities would be a great place to re-erect all those newly discovered stones.
A drive-thru Heritage Parc. - experience prehistoric britain without the need to leave your vehicle.

..I've been away for a while and when i come back what's that i smell ??
