new stones found

Well the Beckhampton excavation took no time to expose the stones, and the Cove got sorted very quickly once they started. It's the talking that takes the time.

Leaving the site "as is" is a perfectly valid option, but not doing so is equally valid. Should the decision rest with NT? And if so, why?

If Mike Pitts is given permission to raise a recumbent stone I don't see why they can say recumbent buried ones are in some way totally different.

But all of the stones that have been excavated in recent years have been re-buried. The straightening of the Cove stones was only done for Health & Safety reasons and to enable the ugly fence around them to be removed.

Hmm. Diffucult one.
Mike has taken 8 years to plan this picking up stone 78.
The loophole he used was that it would give us new archaeo data and include the local schoolchildren.
He was offered the chance of picking up a buried stone but said no as it would only yield Medieaval archaeology.
Stone 78 is unique in that Stukeley drew it standing so it has fallen since 1724 and may give Neolithic datable material.
HoHum,
