That's a sizeable chunk. The 2 inches depth surprises me. Were they taking advantage of existing damage from weathering?

Whatever, it's bloody stupid behaviour. It's a shame that Avebury suffers because access to the stones is so easy. It's just ammunition for the people who want sites to be closed off and made safe from the public.
