As I say I've never read Dames (I'll surely dig him out, one of these days, though). Here's an ill-informed opinion, though...

It sounds to me like Dames is approaching these matters from a largely psychological perspective, and that his theories are to be understoof in that context, not an historical one.

TomBo - I'll lend you my copies of 'The Sibury Treasure' and 'The Avebury Cycle', if you want. Let me know and I'll pop 'em in the post soon, along with those long overdue CDs that I promised you :-)

For the record - I enjoyed his books immensely, despite, and probably because of, the fact that half of it's pure fantasy. They're a breath of fresh air after having your head stuck in any of the more academic archaeology books.
