When a person's had a beard for a long time, and lived an outdoor life, when it's removed the skin's all smooth and unwrinkled underneath. The fashion for male beards comes and goes. In the Mabinogian someone is mentioned as being 'without beard' as though it were highly unusual. The same seems true amongst contemporary male antiquarians.
