Hiya Fitz

What's the evidence that Oddendale Cairn I is ancient?
I always thought it was a fairly recent folly (i.e. younger than the wall next to it).
I've been told there's no hard archaeological evidence one way or t'other, but am happy to be proved wrong

Cheers claire

Hiya Claire
I've just had a look at Turnbulls 1997 TCWAAS article on the area and found this in the notes
"One other local site should be mentioned in this context, the "miniature" stone circle ay NY59281334, adjacent to the entrance to Oddendale hamlet. Although it seems to have existed beyond local memory the monument is unconvincing, the stones not earthfast. It was probably made in the spirit of waggishness, perhaps in imitation of the true Oddendale stone circle, within the fairly recent past. See Cumbria Sites and Monuments record, number 1575."
I'll post this up on the page for the cairn.
cheers
