So! what do people think of the sarsens in the church? Come on Kammer, you were sneering at the 'christianised site' category... Or perhaps they just couldn't be arsed to move them when they built the church? But then why have a trap door so you can look at them?

I dunno really. Sarsens are what they're perceived to be (if that makes any sense at all). What some people think of as a potential standing stone, others consider as good material for burning. Without more information it's hard to say whether the sarsen is there by chance or design.

How old is the church?

Kammer x

How deep/broad is that hole in the one stone and what shape is its cross section (i.e. is it conical or half a ball or what kinda thing)?

Who is the church dedicated to? (if anybody)

It could all be very important (to me at least).

Many thanks

Tom (being nice for once!)

More to come when I finish the film on the other camera...

I recommend this place as a quick stopover to anyone by Adams Grave btw, it has a peace & serenity equal to a lot of ancient sites I've been to.

so, ocifant, I see you went to see the sarsens in the church (at alton priors) too. I read that the church is built on a mound so it's higher than the surrounding fields. Did you notice if that was true? If so was it a large sort of a mound (like part of the landscape) or a smallish sort of a mound (like a barrow)? I was just thinking about the stones again and wondering if they couldn't have been part of a burial chamber or summat. Though it would be in a rather unusual spot, down in the valley. The site is pretty much on the extended line of the ridgeway?
