surely that depends how far back the boundaries go? many of the counties in Scotland still follow more or less the same boundaries as old Pictish kingdoms (so 1500+ years old) which in turn may have been based on earlier tribal boundaries

might be cross as in cross-roads rather than standy-uppy cross (to use the technical term) - is it on a point where several old routes to other places converge?

Good info - it's right near a junction that seems to go back some years - I'll look into that option! Cheers!

I don't really know much about the boundaries in Southampton - there's still places that crop up on maps that I've never heard of even though I've been there! If you see what I mean... Sort of sub-districts of smaller districts, etc...

I'll get lookin! :o) Ah - I should look up the map ref as well, shouldn't I? I'll post it in a bit when I've had a gander...
