I guess we’d all agree that negative racial stereotyping is far from good thing but applying these ideas to British regional stereotypes maybe a step too far.
I work on an oil rig, on here we have people from all over our islands, here’s just some of the names I’ve heard over the past few years, woolybacks, codheads, weedgies, janners, yellowbellies, geordies, scousers, choocters, mackems, dingles, brummies, gallachs, gogs, monkey-hangers, sweaties, tykes, sassenachs, coagies.
Many of these names were originally a form of abuse and most carry certain negative attributes, but most have been adopted by their respective groups and are worn with pride. Many of the scousers I work with play-up their reputations as jolly jack-the-lad scallies and actively re-enforce the stereotype but both they and I know that it’s all bullshit, it’s just part of our working class humour. The same humour that Rich was using in his remark. It means nothing it’s just craic.
