Cup marks, or weathering?

I've heard that pseudo-cups can be formed when metal deposits in a stone rust away - perhaps that's what's happened here?

This was small gobbets (to use a technical term) of metal, fused to the bottom. I vaguely recollect that that's a not unusual thing, indicating bronze age metal working, but someone is about to say, hopefully...

it could be an iron wedge that broke off or it could be lead that was used to hold a metal bracket to make the stone a gatepost.
