How can you tell?

I visited Falkner's Circle today (weblog to follow), and saw the same stone in the hedgerow that stubob photographed here: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/7464

Are these cup marks? If weathering, and assuming the stone has been in the current position for some while, how did the weathering occur?

Its a natural stone. All the stones in the hedgerow that are red are field clearance stones. Reddening comes from millenia in an iron rich soil.
Further along the hedgerow there are a pile of white stones that probably came from the circle.
