The Kammer family are planning on visiting Callanish for the lunar stand-still this summer.

I should emphasise that I'm rubbish at astronomy and anything even vaguely mathematical, but I've just about grasped the basic principals of the lunar event that's anticipated.

Here's the bit I'm confused about....

I know that I need to visit during one of the full moons, but will the effect at Callanish be visible during June, July and August?

Please can someone who knows this sort of stuff tell me?

Cheers,

K x

Howdy!

The way I understand it is that it will be visible from March till September, but not including April and August, for some reason..!

Gerald Ponting can probably tell it better than I can:

The chart towards the bottom of the page suggests June will be the brightest bestest one, but what do I know? ;o)

Here's a simple answer - a bit blunt maybe. Haven't you started watching the moon already ? Starting with last year perhaps ? It'll not be too bad next year - which gives this year for practise. Did you see the moon rise last night ? (Actually they were mainly questions).

Just need a clear view of the southern horizon - could be a playing field or suburban green space. The stones mark the stuff happening - they're not the happening itself.

The moonrise from Counting Hill in Bolton Will be beautiful tonight, far in the south in a clear sky, but absolutely crap in north Northumberland - where there's a thick band of cloud.

similarly confused I am!
just went on one site which says the most southerly declination of the moon is in september around the 15th?
was originally hoping for june or july but according to northern earth.co.uk its actually september .. hmmm?!

I was planning to be there in July but due to a change in plans I'm now trying to organise a quick trip over in June.

As flights seem to have taken an unexpected hike in price over the relevant dates(wonder why?) I'm going to drive and ferry, taking my car across.

The plan is an early start Saturday 10th from Glasgow (n.b. CalMac don't sail to Lewis/Harris on Sundays [11th June is a sunday]) drive to connect with the last ferry on Saturday from Uig, Skye, to Tarbet, Harris. See some stones on the way. Spend Sunday and Monday sniffing around Harris and Lewis while hoping for a clear sky on both nights for the 'moondance' at Callanish, then return first ferry on Tuesday, to be back in Glasgow by teatime(ish).

Anyone interested in sharing the journey drop me a line at [email protected]
and we can firm up on the arrangements.
