Happily, I'm plotting next year's travels. I already have Denmark in the bag for April and have now turned my thoughts north, to Scotland, for the lunar standstill. Moth and I plan a few days exploring Aberdeenshire, then turn west and head for Lewis. I can't decide whether to B&B it or get a self catering cottage somewhere. I've done a few webtrawls and unfortunately the cottage I really want is taken the days I wanna be there. So I'm looking for recommendations. If you've been to Lewis, where did you stay? Would you recommend it?

We stayed at the Hebridean Guest House in Stornoway as per my review on TMA. Did what it said on the tin, & I'd happily stay there again.

We also visited http://www.eileanoirceos.co.uk/ for the jewllery which was amazing, but the view from the window of her self catering cottage has to be seen to be appreciated - think you'd find something to paint ;-)

She was a nice lady as well.

Course, you could always try a blackhouse: http://www.gearrannan.com/
Another stunning setting (Aren't they all on this island?)

HTH.

Theres a B&B right by the stones . . . but I don't think it's on the net. Why not ring the visitor's center and see if they know?

Julie & I drove to Callanish last year without any idea of where to stay. We just made sure there were enough blakets and pillows in the the van. . .
But the woman at the till in the visitor's center at Callanish said "oh, just park on the car park, the toilets are open all night, it'll be fine". So we did, and had a wonderful time at the stones eating cheese and drinking wine & whiskey, then stopped in the van in the visitors car park at night. We watched the sun set on the stones, drunkenly lay on our back in the inner circle and have sat in Wolverhampton pubs ever since saying "was it real?".
I'm rambling. But the answer to your question, we slept in the van and it was no problem because we were invited and there were toilets.
It's so remote there. . you'll love it!

I know Moth has been, have you been before Jane?

We were only in Stornoway for one night, we stayed here:

Communal kitchen/lounge/bathrooms, very small rooms each with 4 bunks and a heater, but extra cheap.
There's also a circle about 1/2 a km away, and a shop/garage the same distance in the opposite direction.
It was nice enough, but would probably be a bit wearing if you were there for more than a couple of nights.

are you still planning to call in on the way past?

Cheers

I'm gonna be in a self catering place for the July full moon with me mum & stepdad. About 14kms North of Callanish itself.

Though bloody inconsiderate Fifa have aranged for a certain footy final to be on that Sunday at 7pm. *cry*
