Callanish 40

God! You make it sound so easy! I was looking into ferry prices and stuff today, as me and my daughter want to get away somewhere - just the two of us. She mentioned Scotland (Orkney actually as she wants to see Maes Howe and the Ring of Brodgar and to hear people talk like Cameron off Big Brother!) so I was wondering about driving there, or indeed to Callanish. Talk about rip-off prices. Jeez! So I looked at flights instead! which are even crazier money... <groan>. It's out of my financial reach. I'm not fit enough to cycle (I have a heart attack, for sure! - where do you put the ashtray on a bike?) and it wouldn't leave me enough time to paint.

I wish I had someone to share the travel costs with, but my daughter is only 13 and still (quite rightly) expects me to pay for everything.

It's *so* frustrating. Callanish and Orkney seem further away to me than anywhere else on this planet.

well i smoke twenty a day, and a fag break makes a great excuse to stop pedalling for a bit. you really could do it - 30 miles a day on a bike amounts still amounts to less than five hours in the saddle daily for an unfit person. at this time of year you can space these hours out how you like, its daylight round the clock up in the isles. admittedly the trip i mention is perhaps too much for a 13 year old, but start with smaller bike trips, and within a couple of years you'll both be raring to do it, no probs. or hire a tandem and go now. doesn't fit on a train though..

all the best

Patience Jane! Circumstances will bring them within your reach - at times I'd virtually given up hope of getting to Callanish.... But you know some of that story!

Habibi makes doing it by bike sound lovely because it would be (in good weather!) and easy because it is.

It's just that other factors get in the way for most of us! (Fitness etc for you, you say. And for me, laziness - as well as fear of the misery of bad weather when on a bike & camping!)

Still having to be patient for the Orkneys myself! I'll get there - maybe not this year, maybe not next year, but when the time comes I'll be ready!

Welcome Habibi! Your idea of getting some 'training' in & doing the trip when children get old enough is actually very appealing. Unfortunately my son, Callan, isn't even 2 until October!!!!

By the time he's old enough, I'll be too old (late 50s) to even get on a bike. Just kidding! (I hope!!) :^)
