Wiltshire Archaeology and Natural History Society had a festival last week, with loads of free events, including a tour of the Marlborough Down. This could be the group you saw. It was over-subscribed, so I didn't get a ticket, but I got to some other events, including a tour of sites on Salisbury Plain, and a talk on recent digs by Pollard & Gillings at Avebury.
