I am currently in Cork City. On tuesday(9th Sept 2003)I will be on my way to Ross Carbery. As I will be on foot I was wondering what would be the best way to get to Reanascreena(stone circle that is)? Also any advice on Bohonagh?

I can't help with advice about 'on foot' - good luck to you!

What I can say is that threre are plenty of sites to see on the way - I spent a week near Rosscarbery earlier this year - wonderful place and plenty of stone to see around that area.

Reanascreena is superb - the best of the bunch in my opinion. From memory, I approached from the North - my notes are here: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/browse.php?site_id=1930

As for Bohonanagh(or however it's spelt) - all I can say is to watch out for the cows!

Have fun.

Reanascreena is about 6km walk north of Ross Carbery. You walk right past Bonohagh, but it's one I haven't been to and it's notoriously tricky to find.

I suggest you buy Discovery map 89 and plan a route yourself. Directions on those country lanes would be insane.

You are also passing pretty close to Templebryan stone circle on you way. Ballyvackey is also just 2km off the main road just off the R599 after Clonakilty.

If you still want directions for Reenascreana I can give them (but will throw in the usual disclaimers :-)

Thanks to both of you. After reading your notes, ocifant I am a little intimidated to try Bohonagh. Aubrey Burl says it's pretty easy to get to(in ,"A guide to stone circles of Britain, Ireland, and Brittany."), but now I am not so sure. I am just crazy enough to try it though. Four Winds disclaimer or not I would love directions to Reanascreena. I will get the OS map, but I would still like an expert opinion.

I'll try, but the roads are mad down there.

route one: A mile south of Clonakilty take the R599 north for around 3 miles. Here you will come to a road on the left (it's actually the 4th left you pass). 4.5 miles along this road you pass a post office and a school. Just over half a mile past this you come to a cross roads. Turn left. Half a mile along this road you will come to a gate on the right with 'Beware of the Bull' on it. Walk along the track beyond this and across the field. When you reach the next fence/hedge you should see the circle. Climb over and there you are. N.B. After 1.5m miles or so along the R599 Ballyvackey stone circle is on your right.

Route two: When you are nearly in Ross Carbery the road crosses an estuary. Do not cross the estuary, but turn right and walk up the east side of it. At the next t-junction turn right. Follow this road for around 4 miles until you reach a t-junction. You are now at the school/post office above. Turn left and follow the above.

Well I made it. I took you advice and got the OS map. A great choice for my first stone circle. I had the place to myself. I wound up staying there for three hours and took way too many pictures. I will post more info in a web log and field notes later
